There was a legend about a parade that was held in Chicago in the 1800s to kick off a Scottish gathering.                      According to the legend, the sound of the bagpipes startled a horse which reared up and threw its rider through a shop window.                       The court case that resulted was decided on the basis of whether or not the bagpipe was a musical instrument.                       The verdict was against the pipes.

  • We are trying to make the yahoo group more effective for distributing information to MWPBA membership. Here are the instructions:

    -- Go to www.groups.yahoo.com
-- Near the top of the page, you will see "Find a Yahoo Group"
-- Type MWPBA in the box and hit the "Search" button
-- You will get a list of results. Currently, the only group that comes up in that list is ours. So click the link.
-- Near the top of the page is a blue button that says "Join this group" -- Click that button

-- At this point, you either need to login to your Yahoo account or create one. It's free to create an account, just be sure to remember your username and password. I cannot retrieve it for you later.

Login, or follow the directions to create an account and then when you send the request to join, please be sure to include a note telling us who you are. While we do our best to recognize names and email addresses, sometimes we don't know them all, so if you just include your name or the band you play with or something to let us know that you are legit. The reason this group was set to members only is to avoid unnecessary spam email or inappropriate content. So we like to know who you are when we approve you!

As soon as you submit your request to join, an email will go to all of the moderators. So long as you let us know who you are, you should be approved very quickly (typically the same day). But if we have to follow up to ask who you are, it might take longer while we await your response.

Once you have joined the group, you can post to all members by sending an email to: MWPBA@yahoogroups.com  Be sure to use the same email address that you used to subscribe. Only that address will be able to post messages.

Please remember that people of all ages and backgrounds read this group, so please be sure to keep the content appropriate. Also remember that attachments are not allowed. Far too many people have complained about large attachments so they are no longer permitted. However, if you have a file that you would like to share with the entire group, you can login to the webpage (the same way that you joined the group) and upload a file or photo to the site. Then feel free to post and let people know that it's there.

  • St Andrew's Day was on Sunday, the first Homecoming Scotland year is in just a few months, so the launch of Scotster is very timely...it's at http://www.scotster.com and is growing fast with people from around the world. I hope you agree that the launch of the first major worldwide social network dedicated to everything Scottish, and run from Edinburgh in Scotland, is worth passing on to members of MidWest Pipe Band Association.   Add your events to the calendar, upload photos of Scotland and your own local area, chat with Scots and others about Scotland in the forums.  I hope you will enjoy joining Scotster and that you will mention it in your newsletter and link to it from your own website - you are more than welcome to link back to your site on your Scotster profile.
